What Wynlakes is built from
A gated golf community on the east side, built out from the mid-1980s onward around the club and the course. Large brick houses, formal dining and living rooms, and floor plans drawn around room-sized rugs rather than around loose scatter pieces.
Established households with long tenure and the heaviest concentration of good hand-knotted rugs on this side of the city. A fair number of those pieces came home from a posting overseas.
The Wynlakes problem
Two things turn up here more than anywhere else on the route, and both come from a rug that never moves. The first is the pad. A room-sized rug under heavy furniture has a solid rubber or vinyl pad put under it once and is never lifted again, and in this climate that pad is a vapour barrier laid on a floor already dealing with a humid summer — it holds whatever moisture reaches it against the back of the rug for years. On a modern factory-finished floor it does something worse, softening and migrating into the finish, and the haze it leaves is in the floor rather than on it. The second is compression. Furniture legs press the pile down to the foundation in eight small circles, the crushed fibre stops recovering, and by the time the sofa is finally replaced the marks are permanent rather than temporary.
