What Sturbridge is built from
Late-1980s and 1990s subdivision building on the east side off Vaughn Road: two-storey brick houses, carpet upstairs as built, and open family rooms downstairs that have mostly had the carpet pulled out and hard flooring put down in the last fifteen years.
Families with school-age children and dogs, and rugs doing real work in the busiest room in the house. Most are large, most are recent, and a great many are hand-tufted rather than hand-knotted.
The Sturbridge problem
Take out wall-to-wall carpet, put down hard flooring, and the next purchase is a nine-by-twelve to make the room bearable again — which at this size and price almost always means a hand-tufted rug: wool tufts punched through a backing cloth, held in place with latex adhesive and covered with a scrim. Latex ages by oxidising, and heat and humidity accelerate it. In a house that spends 86 days a year above ninety degrees with the humidity to match, that glue layer goes brittle years earlier than the showroom implies. The tells arrive in order: a fine tan powder on the floor when the rug is lifted, then loose tufts, then the sour old-glue smell that shows up on humid days, then the backing lifting along one edge. It can be washed — carefully, with moisture kept away from the glue line — and a separated edge can be re-secured, but nothing makes old latex young again.
