What Hampstead is built from
A new-urbanist development off Taylor Road on the east side, begun in the late 2000s: houses pulled up close to the sidewalk on narrow lots, garages off rear lanes, deep front porches, and most of the living space on the ground floor. Slab construction, hard flooring through the main rooms, and rugs used to mark out seating rather than to cover floor.

The Hampstead problem
The porch is the point of a house here, and the porch is where the rug problem lives. Flat-woven polypropylene goes out under cover and stays there year-round, and a covered porch in central Alabama is not a dry place: the rain arrives largely as thunderstorms and thunderstorms come in sideways. Polypropylene does not rot, so nobody worries about it — but the pollen, dust, dog hair and sweet-gum debris caught in the weave do, and they grow the mildew that stains the decking underneath in a rectangle the exact size of the rug. The same rug then gets rolled up damp at the first cold snap and put in a garage, which finishes the job over the winter. Indoors, the ground-floor plan means the whole household passes over two or three rugs and nothing else, so they age at four or five times the rate the rest of the house does.
