What Arrowhead is built from
1970s and early-1980s ranch and split-level houses on wooded lots off Vaughn Road, mostly on slab, with hardwood or tile through the main rooms and mature pines and water oaks overhead.
Second- and third-owner households, many of them families who bought for the space and stayed thirty years. Rugs get handed down inside the house: the good one to the living room, the one it replaced to a back bedroom.
The Arrowhead problem
Montgomery sits on the edge of the Black Belt, and these are not the red iron soils people picture when they think of Alabama. They are dark, heavy prairie clays that swell as they take on water and shrink hard as they dry, and rain here is spread across the year with a dry October at the end of it, so they do both every single year. Slabs and footings ride that movement, and a floor that was level in 1978 is not level now. For a rug that means the load stops being even: it lies over a slow ridge or a shallow dish, wears in a line that has nothing to do with where anybody walks, and will not sit flat however often it is turned. That is a structural problem in the rug as well as under the house — the weave has been pulled out of square on one axis, and putting it right means blocking the rug under tension while it dries, not weighting the corners down at home.
